Overview
The Northern Sewer Augmentation is a major upgrade to trunk sewerage infrastructure in the city’s north, designed to increase wastewater capacity, resilience, and long‑term service reliability.
The project delivers critical enabling infrastructure to support the release of new housing within the Northern Growth Area (NGA) and facilitate industrial development in the Wagga Wagga Special Activation Precinct (SAP).
The works include approximately six (6) kilometres of new trunk sewer mains up to one-metre in diameter, along with two new pump stations capable of moving up to 240 litres per second of wastewater.
Once operational, the network will be able to service up to five (5) million additional litres of wastewater per day from new development, with provision for future expansion to approximately 10 million litres per day as growth demands.
The project will rationalise the existing sewer network, enabling the decommissioning and demolition of two small pump stations on Kingsford Smith Road and one large pump station near Horseshoe Road.
It will also allow the decommissioning of the original sewer mains servicing Bomen, constructed in the 1960s.
The project is made possible with funding from the NSW Government’s Accelerated Infrastructure Fund (AIF) Round 3.
Construction
Construction is planned to take place between 2026 and 2027 and will involve activities such as excavation, earthworks, pipe laying, and concrete works.
Residents and road users can expect to see construction activity within the road reserve and in the Cartwright’s Hill area at times.
While works will be visible, no major disruptions to the road network are expected.
No interruptions to wastewater or other essential services are anticipated during construction.
Road Works and Detours
Road users and residents will be kept informed of traffic disruptions through on‑site Variable Message Signs (VMS) and via www.livetraffic.com.
Where possible, advance notice of upcoming traffic impacts will be provided through Council News and regular updates to this webpage.
Funding
The Northern Sewer Augmentation is one of three projects funded by the NSW Government under the Accelerated Infrastructure Fund (AIF) Round 3, in partnership with Wagga Wagga City Council.
