National Sorry Day 2022

31 May 2022

National Sorry Day was held at the Sorry Rock near the Civic Theatre on 26 May 2022. National Sorry Day has been held annually since 1998.

National Sorry Day is held on the anniversary of the 1997 Bringing Them Home report which had a key recommendation for the Federal Government to offer a formal apology to the Stolen Generations. Kevin Rudd issue this apology on behalf of the government and Australian people on 13 February 2008. Mr Rudd's apology can be viewed on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1-9NO6G_dw

This year Wagga Wagga City Council was honoured to have some local Wiradyuri and First Nation Elders in attendance including some members of the Stolen Generations.

Aunty Isabel Reid began the event by performing a beautiful Welcome to Country which was followed by local Wiradyuri men, Peter Ingram and Luke Wighton, conducting a smoking ceremony and playing the didgeridoo.

The Mayor, Cr Dallas Tout, concluded the official ceremony with a Civic Welcome and then the attendees all joined us for morning tea with local Wiradyuri Elder Uncle Mick Lyons providing the native foods for community to enjoy.

Overall, it was a lovely, respectful, ceremony that was attended by approximately 150 people and was enjoyed by all. Mandaang Guwu (Thank You) for all who attended and showed their respect to the Stolen Generations on the day.
